Mandate

This farm was started with a view to produce Breeder, Foundation, Certified and Truthful seed on a large scale thorough augmentation of seed production programme and quality through improved seed production technology.

Objectives

  • Intensification and expansion of existing soil and water management research in the state to suit different agro-climatic conditions.

  • To initiate research on newer aspects of soil and water management in canal irrigated and rain fed areas.

  • Testing and improved technologies in farmers field.

  • This research station is mainly concentrate on breeder seed and truthful seed production and hence the research activities are very rare.

  • Pilot Project for Olive Cultivation in Gujarat State, (Plan) is running at ARS Aseda and two experiments are undertaken in this project. First is one on rooting of semi hard wood cuttings of olive is running at CAFG (ARID) and second is a filler trial will started in December 2015 at ARS, Aseda.

     Agricultural Research Station, Aseda farm was started with a view to produce Breeder, Foundation, Certified and Truthful seed on a large scale through augmentation of seed production programme and quality through improved seed production technology. Olive is an evergreen oil yielding tree, botanical name Olea europaea, and belongs to family oleaceae. The word derives from Latin "Oliva". Olive is native to the coastal areas of Europe, Western Asia and Northern Africa as well as northern Iran.

Olive oil is commonly used in cooking, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and soaps and as a fuel for traditional oil lamps. Olive oil is considered healthy oil because of its high content of monounsaturated fat (mainly oleic acid) and polyphenols. Other parts of the olive plant of value are the fruit itself, which is consumed as food and leaves, which are used in medicinal teas.

In the North and North - West region of Gujarat state the rainfall pattern is extremely erratic and variable in distribution. The temperature also varies too much during winter and summer. Due to such climate condition large areas suffer from drought. This adversely affects the economy of the region and large area remains under wastelands. This possesses challenges to the development department, university and the human being as a whole. Thus the introduction of new suitable crop like olive to the region can change the profile of the region with proper in industrialization and employability. The adjoining state of Rajasthan has also venture into the cultivation of olive at the Government level in the adjacent district of Jalore, which has similar climate of North and North - West Gujarat. The olive cultivation is highly remunerative and possible under agro climatic condition of North Gujarat.

The pilot project was envisaged covering 400 acres areas at location under the jurisdiction of SDAU, with subsequent participations of the farmer, who will raise the olive plantation at their farms under the technical guidance of the University.

Introduction of olive for successful cultivation in arid and semi arid region of Gujarat.

  • Olive cultivation under the arid and semi arid condition of North and North West Zone of the Gujarat.

  • To assess suitable varieties of olive for North and North West climatic conditions of the Gujarat.

  • Development of production technologies for olive cultivation

  • To develop technique of cultural practices for olive viz, Propagation, Spacing, Pruning, Intercropping etc.

  • To generate employment through olive cultivation.

Considering the objectives and mutual benefits of S. D. Agricultural University, Sardarkrushinagar & Dmul Asia Overseas Pvt. Ltd, Ahmedabad and Asia Everest Ltd Israel solemnity agreed to enter into a MoU in the field of establishment of olive plantations in the SDAU and developing regional specific model of olive cultivation in Gujarat State.
