Erratic behavior of monsoon rain is responsible for making agriculture unstable and less productive and some time leading to a total crop failure. In such condition introduction and production of the horticultural crops viz., ber, pomegranate, aonla, custard apple, date palm, fig, etc. will help in diversification of entire cropping pattern and bring out higher monetary return per unit area. After consideration of this fact and to test the feasibility of arid fruit crops, ICAR has sanctioned the All India Co-ordinated Research Project on Arid Zone Fruits in the VI five-year plan throughout India. It has been implemented at 12 participating centers in India including Sardarkrushinagar in the Gujarat State (B.H.: 2014-1) which came in to existence during 1983. In addition to this, the project was also strengthen under strengthening research in arid zone fruits (B.H. 12014-1) and NARP phase II (B.H.: 9091-5) to intensify the research work.
