Seed comprising all forms of propagules is considered as the basic, critical and vital input for enhancing/ stabilization of productivity and harvesting higher monetary returns per unit area. In fact, seed is the carrier of production technology. Unless, adequate quantity of seed is made available to the farmers, the desired impact of improved, high yielding varieties/ hybrids and improved production technology in boosting productivity will not be realized.
Realizing the importance of seed the erstwhile Gujarat Agricultural University decided to establish a Department of Seed Technology at Sardarkrushinagar, as early as in the year 1973 with vast human and material resources and the initiation of “Farm Development Scheme”. This scheme was started for the development of farm area at Sardarkrushinagar in order to bring it under Research and Seed Production Programme.
