Dr. Ashok Ambalal Patel; B.Sc.(Agri); M.Sc.(Agri); Ph.D.(Agri), resumed as Vice-Chancellor of Sardarkrushinagar Dantiwada Agricultural University, Sardar Krushinagar from 28.07.2014. He started his carrier as Agricultural Supervisor in GAU at the same campus in 1976 and after more than 29 years of experience of extension education, human resource development, teaching, research and management, he took voluntary retirement.
During the service he shouldered responsibilities of Director, State Agricultural Management & Extension Training Institute, Gujarat and State Nodal Officer, Support to State Extension Programs for Extension Reforms (ATMA Scheme), Gujarat for almost five years. Dr Patel also worked as Director of Extension Education of Anand Agricultural University, Anand; Principal, Extension Education Institute, Govt. of India, AAU campus, Anand and also as Director of Extension Education of Junagadh Agricultural University, Junagadh.
He contributed 31 research papers in national & international journals; he has written/ compiled 29 books/ booklets; attended and also presented papers in 54 conferences/ seminars; he planned and conducted many training programs, TV/ Radio programs.
As State Nodal Officer of ERS (ATMA Scheme); initiated the execution of the scheme in Gujarat initially in 8 districts in 2006 and extended to all the districts in 2009. The preparation of SREP for all the 26 districts; formation of commodity interest groups / farmers interest groups; streamlining the activities; etc; was initiated single handedly. As as many as 1,62,204 farmers were motivated to be associated with ATMA scheme by forming 11,163 FIG/CIG. As State Nodal Officer, guided for conducting activities schematically and as a result, ATMA have reached to 12,36,000 farmers of the state, through 56,506 activities. The physical achievements were higher than targeted.
At SAMETI, beyond conducting regular trainings (4510 professionals were trained through 95 training programs), a distance learning centre for PGDAEM was established and contact classes and examinations were conducted. Similarly, he also made projects of NIAM Training, Agrisnet, KCC Publicity, RKVY, NFSM, Gender Trainings and ICC operational. He was instrumental in preparing 239 e-technology packages and success stories in vernacular language, he motivated the KVKs, FTCs & ATMAs for using it in training & ToT, beyond, during Krushi Mahotasvas, as many as six hundred thousand copies were made available to the village under e-gram; the video shows were organized at almost all the 18600 villages and also that farmers were motivated & they purchased thousands of copies.
As Director of Extension Education of Anand Agricultural University, started many new initiatives and schemes funded by state and central government. As Principal of Extension Education Institute, during year 2005-06, he mobilized the team in a way that; since the establishment of the EEI in 1964; highest ever training programs were conducted and highest ever trainees were trained.
He was instrumental in initiating use of computer for office & database management almost 20 years back. He shouldered responsibility of ‘Cyber Extension Cell’ at Gandhinagar for four years from the year 1999. The innovative mass media program popularly known as ‘GAU Satellite Krushi Gosthi’ was started and 17 DRS (receiving classrooms) for farmers’ participation and relaying the programs were established / team up. During the three and a half years, more than 50 programs including a conference and a seminar were conducted, and the agricultural technologies were discussed with more than 10,000 farmers, across the state of Gujarat.
He also worked as Chief Scientist cum Head of Krushi Vigyan Kendra, Randheja for six years from 1991 to 1997; more than 700 training programs were organized beyond discussion meetings, demonstrations, and personal guidance. Started a special research project on ‘Non chemical farming’ at the farm of KVK, Randheja from 1992 to 1997. The results were very encouraging. Special projects on Bio-control demonstration, vermin-composting, farm machinery, agronomical practices, etc., were implemented. Planned and dynamically executed the participatory research work focusing to technology assessment and refinement of technology. During 1993, the Q. R. Team of ICAR was fully satisfied with the working of the two KVKs functioning under his leadership appreciated his managerial abilities.
He was selected and acted as ‘ICAR Core Trainer’ for conducting Training programs for ICAR, for the Pilot Project on “Technology Assessment and Refinement through Institution Village Linkage”. He was Chief Editor of Gujarat Journal of Extension Education for ten years from 1999 to 2009. He also shouldered responsibility of Associate Editor of GJEE for three years from 1990. He is the first secretary of the ‘Indian Association of IT in Agriculture – IAITA’, Gandhinagar (from 2002 till date). He was also visiting faculty at the Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of Information and Communication Technology (DA-IICT), Gandhinagar for two years in 2002 & 2003.
He was a part of selection committee at various institutes / schemes including GPSC for various positions of Agricultural Officer, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, Professor, Dean/Principal and consultants of various capacities. Set question papers for MPSC, APPSC, GPSC, etc.
